The Lyneal Trust
Canal based holidays for people with disabilities

Holidays

Imagine unhurried travel through lush green countryside on long dreamy days with the freedom to stop and dawdle whenever you want; or wandering through the canalside gardens, watching the passing boats and looking forward to a short trip on the Shropshire Lad and a game of pool or table tennis in the evening.

On a holiday with the Lyneal Trust you can have it all, in exactly the mix that suits you best. You are at the helm in every sense!

Lyneal Wharf lies on the banks of the Llangollen Canal three miles east of Ellesmere in the heart of the meres of North Shropshire. The canal is one of the most beautiful and dramatic on the entire inland waterways network.

West from Lyneal, the canal winds through pasture, woodland, hill and dale, with a new view round every corner. It passes 70 feet over the River Ceiriog on the Chirk Aqueduct, sneaks darkly through the 1,400-feet-long Chirk tunnel, and then strikes boldly over the River Dee on the 120-feet high Pontcysyllte aqueduct. The wildlife is varied, abundant, and all around you.

There are level towpaths, occasional shops, and plenty of friendly and accessible pubs, and only a few locks. With all-weather cover on board, rain never stops play!

The Shropshire Lass, Shropshire Lad and Lyneal Wharf Cottages can be hired separately or in combinations together, by anyone with a disability, and their family and friends. Hire charges are very competitive.

The boats have wheelchair access via an aluminium ramp which can be easily stowed on the cabin top, and a carefully designed interior. One of the upper bunks on the Shropshire Lass hinges and stows out of the way for easier access to the lower one. A hydraulic steering wheel allows easier steering. A volunteer skipper can be provided for day trips on the Shropshire Lad but a hands-on approach is very much encouraged and passengers are able to steer the boat themselves.

The Shropshire Lass

The Shropshire Lass is a purpose designed 70-foot residential canal boat with berths for eight people and finished to a high standard. The boat includes a hydraulic lift and hydraulic steering which enables wheelchair users and others to take part in the running of the boat. There is access to all parts of the boat for wheelchairs and the lavatory and shower are designed for wheelchair users.

The Shropshire Lad

'The Shropshire Lad' is a 45-foot canal day-boat and is also purpose designed. It includes a hydraulic lift, hydraulic steering and ramps. This boat has no sleeping accommodation and is designed for day trips. It is available to groups who are staying in the cottages at Lyneal Wharf and is also available to visitors for day trips.

Lyneal Wharf Cottage and Chalets

The Wharfside cottages include a kitchen, day room, conservatory, two showers, two toilets and two small upstairs bedrooms.

There are two chalets with two bedrooms, each sleeping three people. Both chalets have shower and toilet. The third chalet includes washing machine, tumble drier, pool table and table tennis.

The total number of people that can be accommodated is fourteen.
