Committee Activities

COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES (OCTOBER 2009)

Membership

Our Association has 268 members from 173 households. We are currently putting leaflets describing the Association through the doors of new developments in the St John's Hill area (Jan Duck).

Administration

The Secretary and Treasurer have been busy preparing for the AGM. Lyn Leach has helped Committee members to research features and prices of data projectors.

Planning

See planning table elsewhere on this website. The planning committee has recently reviewed and commented upon the Morris Development on Barker Street, attended the public enquiry regarding the green space adjacent to Burrs Field and, in line with the STCRA policy on trees, we kept a watching brief on the felling and pruning of trees. (Alan Shrank, Sheila Sager, Sandy Frew, Mike Maxwell).

Local Government

We have attended the LJC meeting. The Fire Service offers residents individual advice on fire safety. We have reiterated our concerns on public lavatories to the Town Council, who have inherited the responsibility. A letter of welcome has been sent to the new Town Clerk (John Simblet).

Traffic

At their last meeting, it was decided that the Shrewsbury Traffic Partnership should seek a proper link with the Council to feed in ideas on traffic to the Core Strategy (Sandy Frew).

Graffiti and Litter

SCC has been making a concentrated effort to clean up the town to kick start an anti-litter campaign. They have cleaned up all the graffiti along the towpath, cleared the gum from the streets and are making a concerted effort on the Shuts - particularly Seventy Steps which is now being cleaned regularly; apparently the use of the Shut has increased. Richard the street cleaner has a new piece of equipment to vacuum up the cig butts, which has made the job much easier (Geraldine Smith) .

The Police

Perhaps the summer holidays and the temporary closure of one of the biggest night clubs in Shrewsbury following a tragic death determine that policing issues have seen a lower profile in recent weeks. This is a good thing. The liaison between our Local Police Team and the Association continues to be strong and we look forward with interest to the response to an article in the Town Dweller which will hopefully reinforce this link. (Peter Butcher).

Economic Issues

A meeting of people concerned about empty shop windows was convened by Shropshire Council (John Simblet).

Arts and Culture

Members of the Committee attended the day conference on the value of public art in towns and were present at the formal opening of the Darwin Quantum Leap (Shaughn O'Brien).
