Youth Task Group
The Youth Task Group aims to address the personal and community safety of the young people living in the Bridgnorth District. The Youth task as commissioned over the last 12months over 18 youth project with our partners. The year started well with a joint bid by Bridgnorth Community Safety Team, Sport development team and the Severn Centre to the Children’s Fund for £10K to project much needed financial support to the Highley Youth Club and a project lead by the sports development team called Bridging the Gap which was aim at hard to reach young people in the district. This was shortly followed in May by the Natural High Events in all senior Schools in the district. David Grahame a national performer entertained all year 7 and 8 pupils across the district with music, songs and sport whilst giving out important messages around drugs, alcohol and anti social behaviour. The Youth Group also funded the Be Cool Be Safe booklet in partnership with Shropshire Fire and Rescue.
| In June Crucial Crew took place at Oldbury Wells School. This is an annual event, which consists of real life scenarios, arranged as a day event for children aged 10-11 years (Year 6). This is felt to be the most appropriate age as it is the time when children are becoming more independent and having to cope on their own. Approximately 800 children attend Crucial Crew over the five-day period, approximately 150 children per day. |
| The Community Safety Partnership continues to support this successful activity week, which educates children before they begin secondary school. This year there was an increase in the educational scenarios to promote a greater number of safety issues. The aim of Crucial Crew is to provide an enjoyable way of teaching our children to: |
- Become more aware of personal safety;
- Learn how to react to potentially dangerous situations;
- Make a contribution to crime prevention;
- Avoid becoming the victim of crime or bullying;
- Be aware of the role all the emergency services play in our lives;
- Foster and engender good citizenship in society;
- Promote the importance of inter-personal skill such as communication. problem solving, enterprise and leadership.

The Xtreme scheme is a re-branded version of the Reccy Ranger scheme, which has run during the school Easter and Summer holidays for the last 3 years, by Bridgnorth District Council Sports Development Team with funding from the Bridgnorth District Community Safety Partnership. |

The re branding of the scheme has taken place because the target group of older young people (12yrs +) were not attending the sessions meaning that all the criteria for funding were not being met. The re branding has brought about a change in the age group of children getting involved. In total 19 sessions took place in the district. These sessions took place during the evening in two or three-hour blocks from around 5pm- 8pm (This was adaptable depending on the needs of the children in that area) Most sessions were multi sports but three sessions did include use of the mobile skate ramps. |
118 different children attended these sessions with 161 different visits with some children coming to sessions more than once. There was no limit on the number of children attending. There were 98 different children (83%) who attended from the “target” age groups with the rest being slightly younger
Most sessions had enough children attending to make the session active and thus worthwhile. Sessions took place in Norton, Hobbins, Crown Meadow, Shifnal, Albrigton, Broseley and Ditton Priors which was supported by local parents. It has also re-invigorated the idea of a youth group in Ditton Priors.
The youth group also supported the Children’s Festival held in August by providing the Mobile Skate Park for there use with coaches over the weekend period. Skate Fusion is also set to make a come back in Shifnal, Broseley and Bridgnorth.

During the Autumn period the group has supported the local PCSO setting up an anti-bullying poster competition, funded STAR wrist bands to remind year 6 pupils to Stop, Think and Reflect as part of the STAR programme delivered in schools by local Police Officers. The Youth Task group as also supported and contributed to the re-design youth shelter in Highley, funded Shifnal Youth Group and St Mary’s Youth Initiative. More recently the group as funded training for the Mobile Skate Park and funded youth activities in Shifnal whilst the Section 30 dispersal order is in place such as a mobile outreach youth service and Boxing at Idsall Leisure Center and Highley Severn Centre.
Finally the Youth Task groups as also undertook a youth survey at all four senior schools the results of the youth questionnaire will help decide what the group will need to look at in future.
