Shifnal Town Plan ? Thank You and Goodbye
On 5 June 2007, a public meeting brought together over a hundred Shifnal people who voted to start work on a Town Plan that would set out a vision of how the community wanted the town to develop and how to put those ambitions into place.
After a massive consultation process that included all sections of the community, Shifnal Town Plan was launched at a public celebration on 18 March 2009. Adopted by the Town Council and Shropshire Council, a dedicated team of volunteers have worked away at the 39 point action plan until now when virtually all the items have been addressed.
Much has been achieved to enhance community life in Shifnal: the creation of the excellent Farmers? Market; the Business Forum; the Shifnal Festival; the Shifnal Scroll; the Town Trail leaflet; membership of Action for Market Towns; free computer lessons in Shifnal Library; a website; the provision of a town park in a housing development; 30 mph speed limit outside Idsall School; the upgrading of the railway car park; a proposed pedestrian crossing in Park Street and the general upgrading of a number of bus stops.
The Town Plan has given Shifnal the chance to influence local decision making and to bid for funding. For some time, the Steering Committee has been promoting joint working between community groups and councils. In September 2013, Shifnal Forward was born with community wide membership, Shropshire Council and Shifnal Town Council working in partnership to take Shifnal forward. Much of the work of the Town Plan Steering Committee is now being undertaken by the new Shifnal Forward Action Groups and the time is right to bring the curtain down on this hugely successful venture that has run its course.
The final meeting of Shifnal Town Plan Steering Committee will took place on Friday, 12 September 2014. The meeting decided on the allocation of the remaining funds and provided an opportunity to thank all those volunteers who have given so freely of their time and energy to bring this great community project to fruition.
